Hidden gems in Koksijde
Behind the promenade, Koksijde has heritage that many beachgoers never see up close.
- Cottages in a star pattern: from the Bad Schallerbachplein, home to Koksijde's own Manneken Pis, avenues fan out in a star through the Quartier Sénégalais. In this protected villa district Léopold Lejeune and his son, architect Gaston Lejeune, built picturesque cottages from 1908 onwards, inspired by the English garden suburb. Nobody knows for sure where the odd name comes from.
- Idesbald's chapel: on the Jaak Van Buggenhoutlaan in Sint-Idesbald stands the Baaldjes Kruis, a small wayside chapel that the last five monks of the Dunes Abbey had built in 1819 in honour of their blessed abbot Idesbald. Its name recalls an older cross that stood here until it was removed during the French Revolution. The listed chapel is still the goal of a yearly pilgrimage.
