Zuid-Abdijmolen - Mill

The Zuid-Abdijmolen in Koksijde is a charming historic windmill close to the Abdijmuseum Ten Duinen.

What can you expect at the Zuid-Abdijmolen?

• Historic wooden post mill: The mill dates from 1773 and originally stood in Houtem near Veurne. In the 1950s it was moved to Koksijde and rebuilt near the historic site of the former Duinenabdij.
• Living craftsmanship: Inside, you can discover how a traditional grain mill works. When there is enough wind, the mill can actually turn and grind grain. Around 4 Beaufort is needed for the mill to work properly.
• Grinding grain as in the past: The mill can grind around 150 kg of grain per hour. The flour is used by several bakeries in Koksijde, meaning this heritage still has a practical function today.
• Great for families and heritage lovers: The wooden construction, steep stairs and turning mill mechanism make a visit tangible and fascinating. You are not simply standing in a museum here, but inside a real working monument.
• Lovely combination with Ten Duinen: The Zuid-Abdijmolen is located close to the Abdijmuseum Ten Duinen and the abbey ruins. This makes the mill ideal to combine with a short cultural walk through this historic part of Koksijde.

The Zuid-Abdijmolen is not a large attraction that takes half a day to visit, but rather a pleasant and educational stop along the way. Especially for those who want to see more than just the beach and seafront, it offers a lovely glimpse into former abbey life and the traditional miller’s craft.
