Onze-Lieve-Vrouw ter Duinenkerk - Church

The Onze-Lieve-Vrouw ter Duinenkerk in Koksijde is a striking modern church on Kerkplein, close to the centre and a short distance from the seafront.
What can you expect at the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw ter Duinenkerk?
Modern church by the sea: This is not a classical church with a traditional tower, but a contemporary building dating from the period 1956 to 1962. The church was designed by the Bruges architect Jozef Lantsoght.
- Inspired by a shell: The floor plan of the church is based on the shape of a cockle shell. This fits beautifully with its location in a seaside resort on the Belgian coast.
- Cathedral of light: Thanks to the large glass sections, white brick, concrete, steel and glass concrete, daylight enters the building in a special way. Especially on a sunny day, the interior feels surprisingly bright and spacious.
- Special post-war heritage: The church clearly shows how, after the Second World War, people searched for new forms for church buildings. Instead of being heavy and dark, this church is open, light and spacious.
- Also beautiful in the evening: Thanks to the glass sections and lighting, the building has a different atmosphere in the evening than during the day. This also makes it worth passing by during an evening walk.
