The Plaatsduinen are a small but atmospheric nature area on the edge of Oostduinkerke. It is a peaceful spot for anyone who wants to get away from the bustle of the beach, the seafront promenade or the village centre.
What can you expect in the Plaatsduinen?
- Small but varied dune area: The Plaatsduinen consist of old, overgrown dunes, grasslands, shrubs and small woodland plots. As a result, the area feels surprisingly varied despite its modest size.
- Quiet walking paths: Several unpaved paths run through the nature area, ideal for a short walk in complete tranquillity. Along the way, you mainly hear birds singing and experience the quiet side of Oostduinkerke.
- Plenty of birds and insects: Thanks to the mix of dunes, shrubs and flower-rich grasslands, blackbirds, robins, wrens, tits, butterflies and bees all live here. Sometimes a buzzard can also be seen gliding above the dune landscape.
- Flower-rich nature: In spring and summer, wild plants and flowering grasslands bring colour to the landscape. Especially in soft morning or evening light, this is a lovely area for nature lovers and photographers.
A hidden nature spot near Oostduinkerke
The Plaatsduinen are not among the best-known nature areas on the Belgian coast, and that is precisely what makes them attractive. It is a pleasant place for a short walk, a quiet photo moment or a relaxed stroll through the dunes.

- Parking: The best place to park is the nearby Witte Berg car park. From there, you can easily walk towards the Plaatsduinen.
