Oostvoorduinen - Nature

The Oostvoorduinen form a special dune area between Nieuwpoort-Bad and Oostduinkerke. The area is part of the larger nature reserve Ter Yde and is a peaceful place for those who want to go walking, enjoy nature and discover the lesser-known side of the Belgian coast.

What can you expect in the Oostvoorduinen?

• Special dune landscape: The Oostvoorduinen consist of gently rolling, medium-aged dunes. Unlike young coastal dunes, you will find little open sand here and no major height differences, but rather a quiet landscape with moss vegetation, dune grasslands and low-growing plants.
• An ecological gem: The area is known for its enormous richness in plants and insects. Rare plants such as sea holly, limestone bedstraw and prostrate flax can still be found here.
• Part of Ter Yde: The Oostvoorduinen are part of the larger dune complex Ter Yde, a valuable nature area between the beach, dunes and polder land. Together with, among others, the Hannecartbos and the Zeebermduinen, this forms one of the most beautiful nature zones on the West Coast.
• Nature with a story: In the late 1970s, the Oostvoorduinen almost ended up being parcelled out as a residential expansion area. The fact that this was eventually prevented makes the area even more valuable today: a piece of authentic coastal nature was preserved.
• Different in every season: In spring and summer, the flowers, insects and butterflies stand out most. In autumn and winter, the area has a quieter, more open atmosphere, with lovely views across the dune landscape.

The Oostvoorduinen are not a busy recreational area, but rather a place for walkers and nature lovers who appreciate the finer details. The combination of flower-rich dune grasslands, rare plants and the peaceful setting makes this area especially attractive for a relaxing walk.

• Location: A good starting point can be found on the André Geryllaan, to the right of the cemetery of Oostduinkerke-dorp. From there, you can walk straight into the nature area. Ideal for a peaceful walk through an open and natural dune landscape.
